What should I do before I attend a career fair?
Research the organizations before you go.
- Search the website and make a list of exhibitors. Prioritize and search the websites of organizations with whose representative(s) you wish to meet.
- Search your on-campus job postings to find out if they have advertised and what types of positions they have available.
- Attend on-campus employer information sessions and gather company literature, brochures, business cards, and contact names. Check your campus career and employment centre for details.
Prepare a list of questions for those organizations that interest you.
Questions such as: what are the main skills or competencies you look for? Can you describe a typical day? Avoid initial questions about salary and benefits.
Prepare a current resume
Although you may be directed to a website for application, there are employers who will take a paper-based application. Check with your campus career or employment centre to find out what programs or resources are available to help you.
Prepare a brief introduction .
Be ready to state your name, program, area of interest and reason for attending the fair. Start with the exhibitors nearer the bottom of your list so you will have a chance to overcome any nervousness before you approach your top choices. The more recruiters you speak with, the more skilled you will become at these first introductions.
Take a “Prepare for the Career Fair” workshop.
Being confident and prepared will make the event that much more successful for you. Each partner university hosts a pre-workshop giving you a greater in-depth knowledge about the event. Check the workshop section for a schedule or take the on-line workshop.
